Cultural Preservation
BAMEDCA undertook the restoration and reconstruction of key structures within the Bamendankwe Palace, including the construction of modern accommodations for the Royal wives. This project preserved the cultural heart of the Bamendankwe people while ensuring the palace meets the dignity befitting its significance.
Several structures within the Bamendankwe Palace had deteriorated significantly over decades, threatening the integrity of a site that is central to the community’s cultural identity. The accommodation facilities for the Royal household were particularly inadequate and in urgent need of modernization.
The Bamendankwe Royal household, cultural custodians, and the entire Bamendankwe community both at home and in the diaspora who draw identity and pride from the palace.
Close collaboration with traditional authority (the Fon and Palace Council) was essential to ensuring the project respected cultural protocols. Community ownership was highest when members were involved in both planning and execution.
