Executive Summary

BAMEDCA undertook the restoration and reconstruction of key structures within the Bamendankwe Palace, including the construction of modern accommodations for the Royal wives. This project preserved the cultural heart of the Bamendankwe people while ensuring the palace meets the dignity befitting its significance.

Problem Statement

Several structures within the Bamendankwe Palace had deteriorated significantly over decades, threatening the integrity of a site that is central to the community’s cultural identity. The accommodation facilities for the Royal household were particularly inadequate and in urgent need of modernization.

Objectives

  • Restore and reconstruct deteriorated structures within the Bamendankwe Palace
  • Build modern, dignified accommodation for Royal wives
  • Preserve and strengthen the cultural identity of the Bamendankwe people
  • Engage the community in the stewardship of their cultural heritage

Target Beneficiaries

The Bamendankwe Royal household, cultural custodians, and the entire Bamendankwe community  both at home and in the diaspora  who draw identity and pride from the palace.

Activities Implemented

  • Structural assessment of deteriorated palace buildings
  • Community consultation with the Fon and Palace Council
  • Procurement and construction of Royal wives’ accommodations
  • Reconstruction of key ceremonial and administrative structures
  • Dedication ceremony attended by the Fon, community leaders, and BAMEDCA representatives

Lessons Learned

Close collaboration with traditional authority (the Fon and Palace Council) was essential to ensuring the project respected cultural protocols. Community ownership was highest when members were involved in both planning and execution.
